“Matthew5vs16: Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven (KJV).”
The Bible quote above confirms four things I will like us to talk about in the next few minutes, but before I proceed; I will implore us not just to read this and think it as one of those articles but to see it as a means of transformation in our lives and thereby leading to change in our generation.
Having said this, let’s get started.
The first thing this Bible verse confirms is that we all carry light. Saying we carry light does not mean we all are Olympic torch bearer or we work for the lightman group, it simply means that our creator bequest each and everyone of us with talents according to our ability and purpose in life. Some of us, our light is to be a leader who leads his people out of slavery; Some of us, our light is to invent and profer solutions; Some of us, our light is to sing; Some of us, our light is to stand in the gap and intercede for others. In a nutshell our light should make us an agent of change and to be totally realistic most of us are blessed with combination of this light. In essence we all have purpose for being here and we have been endowed in tandem with our purpose.
Secondly, you have to let your light shine and in order to shine, we must burn. I know using the word ‘burn’ sounds extreme but I don’t mean setting yourself on fire physically. What I am saying is this; you carry light, Yes! You have a lot of work to do for that light to shine. To better explain the work you have to do, I will do that using light analogy:
Quality of light: the quality of light can be measured by how hard or soft it is. In your quest to let your light shine, you will be tested, tried, molested and discouraged but you have to show you’re never going to give up on your resolve to shine…you have to be hard enough to get up after every fall, hard enough to be calm and composed when the going gets tough and soft enough to always help others to achieve success too.
Direction of light: Light travels in a straight line which means you have to be focused for you to shine. Being focus means; knowing where you’re going, how to get there and the time it will take to get there. Focus also requires sacrifices which ranges from; your desire to please everyone, your free weekends to watch your favourite soccer game, your goodnights sleep, time with family and friends, healthy lunch or even worse; letting go of someone you really care about because they don’t share your dream, your college degree and so on. Your light is going to make demands from you, the question is; are you ready to do whatever it takes?
Lack of direction, not lack of time, is the problem. We all have twenty-four hour days.
Colour of Light: colour of light can either be warm or cold. This relates to your integrity which is a personal choice; an uncompromising and expected consistent commitment to esteem moral, ethical, spiritual and artistic values. In other words; you can’t be warm and cold at the same time, you have to choose one and stick to it.
Thirdly, your light is meant for good work; it is for liberating others, making someone joyful, striving for peace, learning to love your neighbour, spreading hope and for changing one heartbeat at a time, thereby making the world a better place.
Lastly, your light must lead people to glorify your father in heaven. All the hard work that went into creating you and making sure you have all its takes to succeed is not for your name to be exalted, it is for you to return all adoration to your father in heaven who has given you the opportunity to be useful tool in his hands. I will end this with the famous poem by Marianne Williamson.
“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your
Playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people will not feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It is not just in some of us; it is in everyone and as we
let our own light shine, we unconsciously give others permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”
