Remember that BOB’s song ‘nothing on you’, most of us thought Bruno Mars owned it because he featured in it…….

Beautiful girls all over the world

I could be chasing, but my time would be wasted

Cos they gat nothing on you baby.

Ok, I’ll stop now before I get spanked. Talking about believe, I have this notion that everything in this world revolves around believe or don’t you think that this whole ‘living life’ thing is based on believe? Life is what you believe it to be, believe you can and you are half-way there. I believe the following facts will enhance our understanding about ‘believe’ and probably help us make the necessary amends.

Believe in your foundation: Foundation here means core. What is your core? Still confused right, ok! Foundation is a base you build on. Believing in your foundation means building on the right value system from get-go. One major problem Nigeria has as a nation is that our foundation was not laid on a concrete value system (the essential guide on a journey to greatness). You probably will be wondering why I repeated the phrase ‘value system’ in the past few lines and you’re also likely to be pondering on what it means, let me clarify it:

Value System: is a set of ideal/principles that guides your behaviour. Having said that, your personal value system gives you structure and purpose by helping you determine what is important to you. Its helps you express who you are, what you stand for and never let you compromise. However, personal value system is divided into four categories which include:

  • Personal values: These are traits we aspire to attain, and which defines our character.
  • Spiritual values: These are the values that connect us to a higher power and give us sense of purpose beyond our material existence.
  • Career values: The best use and expression of our talents and skills for the purpose of contributing to society and for monetary compensation.
  • Family values: The affection shown towards those we are close to; our parents, our children, our siblings, other family members and our friends.

However as social beings, there are certain values we find desirable i.e. traits that we value in others and ourselves which transcends social, cultural, economic and religious boundaries. Some of these traits are: integrity, loyalty, respect, love, excellence and responsibility.

Believe in your growth: Having a solid foundation is great, but you have to grow; build on that foundation. The obvious question is ‘how do I grow?’ You grow by persistently equipping yourself with skills both formal and informal, discovering what is important to you and by taking calculated risk. Personal growth is subjective in the sense that, we all have different goals and priorities, which mean different activities and attitudes will make us proud of ourselves. We also have different natural strength and weakness that are part of our genetic build-up. In essence, there is no general formula to growing personally; you have to discover what works for you in order strike a balance in your life.

Believe you can win: Life is a journey of change we all have to travel. This journey is a ruthless one, it’s not fair and it is paved with roses amidst thorns. To get to your destination, you need to believe in yourself that you can, because oftentimes you will be shaken to your very core.

The reason why I used the phrase ‘you can win’ is because it’s a war between you and life, you want the best out of life and life wants to know if you deserve it. Everything I said above might sound a bit scary but all you need are three Ps to make victory happen, which are:

  • Patience: it’s a constant reminder that there is time for everything, a time to work and a time to reap. Success doesn’t jump on you overnight, you have to constantly maintain your commitment to winning, work the work and then you have a chance to succeed.
  • Persistence: This means diligence and determination, no matter how clumsy the journey looks, keep on keeping on and don’t compromise. Tough time never last but tough people do.
  • Perseverance: refers to your ability to overcome setbacks, maintain your motivation and confidence in the face of periodic failures.

I believe that with these few points that have been raised above, we’ve been able to come to the understanding of what believe is and how much effect it has on our life. Basically, living life is based on believe.
